Our Poetry is more like short stories in verse which is based on what we see and hear and from our complete imagination.

The Wedding Mishap

The great day had arrived

Expectations were high

The lovely bride greeted

With a smile and a sigh

The groom looked distinguished

In a suit from Moss Bros

With hair done by Luigi

His hairdressing boss

Four Bridesmaids were in dresses

That made the pulse race

Everyone was happy

With a smile on their face

The ceremony went perfect

Every word was heard

But as the music played loudly

It disturbed an ill-tempered blackbird

Who flew down with a swoop

As the Bride and Groom left the church

And made off with the bride’s veil

Leaving her in the lurch

Now tears were falling

All over her dress

In a short space of time

She looked quite a mess

So the Groom went of running

Giving chase, to no avail

Last sight he caught of the Blackbird

Was his long fluttering tail

His brides veil now disappearing

Right out of sight

Over the nearby houses

He couldn’t save it, try as he might

Back to his new wife

Who by now had calmed down

And off to the reception

On the other side of town

Where a good time was had

By one and all there

And the Blackbird

To be truthful

Didn’t really care

The moral of this little tale

DON’T PLAY LOUD MUSIC IN A CHURCH

Old Wooden Head

Outside in the garden

Just to the left of the shed

Sits and old sage

With a wooden head

He never moves a muscle

To help to cut the grass

Or do any weeding

Just sits as bold as brass

However, what happens after dark

When we are all in bed

Would make you blush with shame

Just make your face go red

He comes alive at midnight

Around the garden he goes without fail

Upsetting the lovely mermaid

By treading on her tail

As she splashes around in the water fountain

Nude as nude can be

The poor old Gnome sat in the corner

Covers his eyes so he cannot see

But poor old woody just gets excited

And wants to dance as well

But the mermaid has to point out

If he gets wet then his limbs will swell

Then he will rot way and die

Therefore, he just has to stand and stare

With a loving teardrop in his eye

Because he loves the Mermaid

Who is so sweet and fair

Has done all his life it seems

However, she does not seem to care

If he had his way tomorrow

He would make her his darling wife

But sadly, morning soon comes around

And they go back to their normal life

So as you walk around the garden

Please don’t let on you know

Because no one would believe you

So it is best to let it go

Robin Redbreast

A Robin sits amongst the Snow

His redbreast out on full show

A chirpy little bird is he

Has he just come to see me?

His spindly legs with his body so fat

Tasty meal for next doors cat

However, he is alert to all the danger

Because to my garden he is no stranger

Often he flies in to chirp hello

Today especially in all the Snow

I will build a Snowman so he can be sat

On his head, perched on his hat

He sings his heart out just for me

Flutters his wings so I will see

That he has arrived and needs some food to eat

And I always throw some to his feet

Once he has had his daily fill

Off he goes, out of my garden, over the hill

So, I sit and wait until another day

When my little fat Robin comes my way

Old Age

You know old age has caught you up

When your teeth come out at night

And when you look into the mirror

You get a nasty fright

Because where you’re lovely skin used to be

It’s now all creased and wrinkled

The lines run across your forehead

To match your chickens neck

The bags under your eyes are there for all to notice

So you just say what the heck

Constipation is the thing

That keeps you up at night

Along with your weak bladder

Nothing ever feels just right

Along with the creaky knees

Arthritic limbs and general aching body pain

Which is so excruciating?

You just wish you were young again

Yes, we’re getting older

The age gap is no more

So out comes the bottle of Jack Daniels

And I end up on the floor

When I wake up next morning

My head bursting to distraction

And as I try to get up again

I fall and end up in traction

Sea of Dreams

As my thoughts just pass me by

I sometimes sit and wonder why

My dreams just seem to come and go

From whence they came, where did they go?

So real are they when they arrive

It is as though I have come alive

In a world of make believe

Where it’s hard to conceive

That we are in a different world when we are asleep

In our dreams we travel deep

To a land so far away

When we must awake we would rather stay

Our dreams become so very concise

And we arrive there in such a trice

Sometimes at night it is hard to sleep

We try to imagine and count sheep

So that we can pass through

Into our dream state, a powerful hue

Time ceases to be important as we dream

Nothing will be as it may seem

A picture appears into the mind’s eye

Though we may be in dreamland and it may pass by

When we awake we may or may not remember where we have been

But then paradise is rarely seen

Like the sea it ebbs away

To return another day

Brainwaves search at every corner of our mind

To find the answer, to unwind

The secret that has been lost for eternity

The true meaning of our dreams you see

MARIA

Maria is from Croatia a far distant place

How she arrived here is such a disgrace

Dragged away from her family at only eighteen

With a promise of a life she had never seen

Coming to a position that would pay well

And keep her in clothes and send money home as well

So as to help her parents who were quite poor

And the money she would send would help them more

Put on a plane and arrived in the dark

Taken to a house that was quite stark

Raped and abused by many men

Never thought she would see home again

Made to work as a prostitute twenty-four seven

In dark and dingy rooms taking money she was given

Many a beating she had to take

Otherwise, her body would end up in a lake

Her body now battered her private parts torn

No longer had need of the dress she had worn

So often used didn’t know the time of day

I wish I were dead was all she would say

Sold on three times for a few thousand pounds

To further deprivation as bad as it sounds

The treatment the same, more rape more abuse

Forced to work in massage parlours, what was the use

Frightened and lonely and at her wits end

She was lucky that one client became her friend

He arranged her escape, helped her to flee

But she still never knew how safe she would be

He got her to a safe house, many miles away

Now hounded by police who wanted help in any way

To stop those responsible, close their evil trade down

And make the streets safe in the city and town

Maria was lucky in the end she was saved

But would always be wary, alone and afraid

She could no longer trust anyone she would ever meet

Always apprehensive when out in the street

The Rapes and the Beatings her body abused

Deeply disturbed though not alone still confused

How anyone can survive such a horrific ordeal

The pain and the suffering is hard to conceal

She grew up as a young girl full of laughter and fun

Despite being poor, her life had begun

So these promises of a better life were welcome for sure

To help her poor parents, to give them more

Her illusions shattered, what’s left for her now?

She has to learn to cope with the pain somehow

But someday she will meet that special man

Who will truly love her and help her all he can

Not all men are as evil as those who abused

Her trust and naivety for which she was used

What hurts her most is her inner feeling,

Her body’s no longer her own, it will take time healing

The thought of someone being sold, used and abused

Is against all humanity, leaves one aghast and confused

How could countries let this happen, why no deterrent

The anger it raises, makes one incoherent

Something must be done to stop this evil trade

So people must be made aware, not kept in the shade

Maria had rights, which were just ripped away

But at least with help she lives to fight another day

So don’t bury your head in the sand

Raise up your voice and give Maria a hand

To raise awareness of this evil trade

Of selling young girl’s bodies and the money that’s made

No thought for the minds and souls that have been taken

Leaving bodies mangled, abused minds disturbed and shaken

Just remember it could be your very own daughter

So don’t wash it under the bridge of life, just like flowing water

Teddy & Tommy

Teddies of upstairs to bed

Candle in hand to see the way

In his nightshirt he looks such a delight

To kneel by his bed and quietly pray

And ask for forgiveness for being a naught Teddy

Hoping that Santa Claus will bring him joy

When he reads the note he’s been left downstairs

And hopefully leaves Teddy his favorite toy

That he’s asked for in his letter

But Teddy could never forget his boyhood chum

Young Tommy, who looks after him, cuddles him to sleep

For they are inseparable, the two of them forever

A friendship they will forever keep

They laugh and play and play all day

At night in the land of nod they dream together

To have a bear like teddy to love and treat

Will suit Tommy forever and ever

Always remember your friends at Christmas

Billy the Milkman

All smiles and talk

Went to work with a happy face

Bringing joy each place he would walk

Collecting bottles from the milk float

At five am every day

Out on his rounds

He went out on his way

Driving the streets so early

Up with the Lark

Who is chirping and chattering

As he flies around in the dark

Somewhere in the distance

A dog barks, quite a din

Where, at his first customer Mr Jones

Is having a lie in

Clink clank, go the bottles

As Billy walks up the path to the house

Trying to be silent

Like the proverbial Mouse

Delivering his quota of milk

To everyone on his round

Is his expectation

As his feet he does pound

Running between houses

So to finish as quick, as he can

He bring Milk, Loaves and Butter

And the odd small fruit juice or two

To keep his customers happy

There is nothing he will not do

But one Friday morning

As he had nearly finished his round

Someone crept up behind him

Not making a sound

He was grabbed around the neck

Heard, your money or your life

Realising he was being robbed

His first thoughts, were for his kids and his wife

As the attacker tried to steal his money pouch

Which, was attached to his waist rather tightly

So as to safeguard the money he collected

Throughout, the early morning light

He thought to himself

I will not be robbed at knife point today

He brought back his head

And his arm released Billy

Almost straight away

Old Mrs Sullivan

Out walking her dog

As she did in all weathers

Come Rain, Snow or Fog

Had seen what was happening to Billy

And picked a piece of wood

And hit the attacker on the side of his head

As hard as she could

Down he went moaning

Stunned and distraught

As P C Maguire arrived

The thief was well and truly caught

Billy was indebted to Mrs Sullivan

For her assistance when it mattered

And for the next hour or so

Over tea they just chattered

But Billy suddenly remembered

He still had his round to conclude

It had been an eventful morning

With the villain complexly subdued

And on his way to the police station With P C Maguire

But Billy still had to deliver his Milk, and his food

On reaching the Dairy at the finish of his day

To the cheers from his colleagues

He went on to say

You never realise the friends that you make

As every morning you wend your merry way

Smiling and laughing with his patrons

Making a bright start to their morning lives

Saying good morning Mr So and so

And smiling at their wives

A simple man Billy may be

But he touches many people’s hearts its true

And brings a smile and goodwill to everyone

He meets in the darkened morning hue

In a Secluded Wood

In a secluded wood a lonely house sits

Amongst the trees looking forlorn

Until the winter and the Snow

Light up and relieve all the gloom

Its pathway now covered in a white blanket

And the steps now slippery with Ice

However, its lights glow like a beacon

Causing the whole house to glow

As the smoke pours out from its chimney on high

A white streak going up into the sky

It looks like a picture from a Christmas card

A warm welcome I am sure, would be had inside

To sit beside the raging fires

One in every room

To toast some bread, bake some spuds

A jolly time would be had by all

In fact, I know it would

You see, it’s where I grew up as a child

A house full of love and laughter

Memories never forgotten

As I walk down the lane, the steps remain

But the house is now a ruin

It is such a shame when things come to an end

But sadly time marches on

Moreover, my childhood was long ago

Oh to rebuild it to its former glory

But the pictures I remember

Assure that its lives on forever

As the Candle Burns

As the candle burns

The pages turn

With history in the making

But as we read about our past

Of things we thought would never last

And of time that life was taking

Page on page our lives unfold

Of the story to be told

In many years from whence we came

Of battles won, of things invented

People with lives not so contented

No one page is just the same

So as it flickers and sheds is light

We read on well into the night

History unfolding before our eyes

Be it a novel or a book of fact

It takes time for us to react

To release that inner, disguise

As the Candle flickers and burns

The wax down the candle onward it churns

Illuminates the flower bowl with ease

Its red leaves flutter in the light evening breeze

As through yonder window it creeps

While everyone else in the house quietly sleeps

What wonders do we discover and take in?

A wondrous feeling since we begin

To understand from whence we came

Compared to history our lives today are tame

So as I put down my nightly read

Sleep succumbs if I succeed

To contain my excitement of what I have learned

Collected that for which I have yearned

Some detail of our former existence

The love, the pain with no resistance

As slumber overtakes my mind

I am sure tomorrow more knowledge I will find

My Heart the Postman and You

As I sit at staring at my mobile phone, waiting

For the telephone to ring

I think maybe I will be lucky

A love letter maybe, the Postman will bring

A message from the one I love

As true as true can be

Just remember that special love

Begins with you and me

Always in my thoughts and on my mind

The girl I left so far behind

Whose magic smile just melts my heart

And took my very soul right from the start

I may be so far away

In a hostile land and against the enemy

But will be home again someday

Back to your arms, don’t you see

So as I sit and wait for the daily post

The man who drifts in like a ghost

To bring weekly joy from his mailbag

The daily wait is such a drag

But the perfume on the paper I can smell

Just goes down, so very well

Reminds me what I miss so much

Your kisses and your wonderful touch

Sometimes, when I get down, and my mind wanders

Melancholy thoughts abound

Of times together, that may have past

And why I miss you so, when you are not around

So Mr Postman, do your best

Bring me that special message that I need

From my loved one so far away

Today I hope you can get through, Oh yes, Oh yes indeed

The Sky

The Sky is aflame

Its glow reaches upwards to eternity

The Horizon a mass of light

A new day the only certainty

An amber sheen caresses the ceiling

Of the gentle blue morning sky

Moreover, the darkness still abounds

Surrounding the ground so still and dry

Like a gentle fire burning bright

Or a thousand electric lights

All switched on together

The scene it gentle blights

The darkened line of hedgerows

Tops glistening with the colourful hue

Takes one’s breath away completely

As a shadowy pylon stands in mystic view

Even the light glows through other car windows

Like bonfires suddenly raising

Though in the passing meadows

The cattle in darkness are still gently grazing

Its one of life’s mysteries this early morning view

A flame of solid sky

I never cease to be amazed

As I go driving by

My Heart the Postman and You
